Introduction

The Baltic Sea Science Congress is an international forum for researchers of the Baltic Sea countries and is uniting the three major scientific communities: the Conference of Baltic Oceanographers (CBO), Baltic Marine Biologists (BMB), and Baltic Sea Geologists (BSG). The objective of the congress is to bring together marine scientists and experts as well as young researchers. The headline of the 8th Congress was “Joint research efforts for sustainable ecosystem management”.

The 8th Congress was organized by Russian State Hydrometeorological University (RSHU) (www.rshu.ru) in cooperation with BONUS and Russian research institutions and scientific societies, with large contribution of CBO, BMB and BSG. It was held on August 22—26, 2011, in the city of St.Petersburg, Russia.

Calendar of the 8th BSSC preparation

July 1, 2010 — First Call, opening of the Congress web-site, call for proposals of the themes of sessions and workshops.

September 10, 2010 — Second Call (specifying the venue and detailed information on the conference arrangements).

October 10, 2010 — deadline for the Congress Theme Proposals.

December 2010 — Call for Abstracts.

March 31, 2011 — Abstract submission deadline.

May, 2011 — Notification of accepted presentations. Preliminary Programme of the Congress.

1, July 2011 — Registration and payment deadline.

July 2011 — Final Programme (with abstracts).
